Thanks to photo shop, canva and a host of other software many people are beginning to realize just how easy it is to become a freelance graphic designer. For those who still are unsure of how to start a freelance graphic design business we have compiled a quick list that teaches you how:
1. Save Your Money
I recommend before starting any freelance career that you save some money(before you get started and if you’re not forced into freelancing). If you are able to launch your freelance business with six months worth of expenses saved then you won’t have to worry about the feast or famine world that many deal with in the early stages of their freelance careers.
2. Know Your Target Market
Knowing who your target market is will be beneficial before you start any freelance business. If you are able to identify what their challenges are and how you can solve them then you will come into your business with much more of an advantage than many others.
3. Market your services
Freelance work can be sporadic, especially when you’re getting started. Making sure you constantly promote yourself will be critical to your success as a freelancer. Many freelancers hate doing this because they feel as if they are being ‘over the top’; however, the more you market the more visible you’ll be.
4. Build a network
Teamwork makes the dream work so the key to being successful as a freelancer is to make connections with as many other freelancers you can whose skills complement yours that way you can team up on projects, refer one another and also offer accountability.
5. Consider a Niche
Having a niche is a great way for you to not only find clients easier but it also justifies your rates because you have a niche. Choose an area where you have the most expertise and also see the most earning potential and run with it.
6. Pay yourself a living wage…or better
When you set your rates always be mindful that you are paying for your business expenses as well as your family’s lifestyle. If you’re afraid that having higher prices will scare people away, you’re right but the key is to get clients that understand your value and are willing to pay for it.
